What is a podcast?
Podcasting is the name given to broadcasting on the internet without the use of a "radio station".
It means that ANYBODY who has something to say about ANYTHING can record, upload and then broadcast their views.
The audience are those are anybody that can download the recordings onto computings or into mobile devices such as (but not only) iPods.

Here is a very technical website with details on just about anything you need to know about Audacity.
Here is a simpler version as a slide presentation. It is probably best to see it in full screen as it is hard to read.

Problems
Most of the problems stem from using the Podcasting software such as Audacity - although it is reasonably straightforward and storage of the podcasts.
Podcasts are usually big in size (i.e. at least a couple of Mb) and until recently it was difficult to find a place to store them. However, a lot of sites are now offering Gb + storage for free, so even this is less of a problem.
The big issues occur if a lot of people like your podcasts and want to download them. This creates problems with bandwidth and many places that store such items have 10-100 Mb limits per day. This might mean that only 2- 40 people can download your podcast before it gets blocked - very frustrating for popular downloads.
One solution is to use iTunes to store your podcasts.

Privacy, safety and copyright issues
Below is a rather heavy summary of the main issues that you need to be aware of when creating a podcast. We won't be publishing ours but you might in the future!

Overview Of The Legal Issues You Need To Consider.
When creating your own podcast, it is important to make sure all necessary rights and permissions are secured for the material included in your podcasts. This is relatively easy if you create all of the material that is included in your podcast but can become progressively more complex the more you include material created by other people. If you do not obtain the necessary rights and permissions, you may get into legal trouble for incorporating third party material into your podcast and for also authorizing others to use that material as part of your podcast.
The main legal issues that you will likely face that are unique to podcasters are related to copyright, publicity rights and trademark issues.
Podcasters share similar concerns to bloggers in relation to defamation, privacy, reporter's privilege, media access, election and labor laws and adult materials. Consequently, if the content your podcast is likely to involve one of these issues, you should check the corresponding section of the EFF Bloggers FAQ
